The Challenge:
A friend of mine wanted to study to become a Reiki Master. She looked at various options and discovered something that she has been so pleased with that she wanted to tell the world about it. Well she's even less technical than I am so I am writing this as a summary of her story.
Sarah wanted to set up her own Reiki practice from home to supplement the household income while her kids were at school. She also wanted to be certified and up and running as quickly as possible, and didn't want to spend too much money doing so.
The Research:
Let's start with the costs involved. She found a number of courses available. Many of these were residential, and by the time she had added her travel, accommodation and food bills to the course costs she was looking at well over £750. She actually completed the course for less than 10% of this figure.
If she split the course into its 3 levels, it would also take her many weeks to move through the Practitioner, Advanced Practitioner and Master levels. She wanted to make sure that at the end of the course she really was a certified Reiki Master and able to practise in a professional manner. Being an impatient sort, she also wanted to be qualified and ready to work in about 3 days!
Her research found that there are a number of ways to study Reiki at home. One way is simply to buy a best selling book. If this is your preferred style, then one of the best around is The Essence of Reiki (ISBN 0953262006) which is available in all good bookstores.
The other option is to choose one of the comprehensive home study courses. She chose the home study version of this book. It took her through the 3 levels in a really thorough manner with beautifully presented materials supported by audio MP3. She was also fully supported by 2 qualified Reiki Masters for 12 months. As you would expect, there were a few "downsides" as well. She needed the discipline to devote the time to complete the course but this turned out to be a lot easier than she expected because she actually thoroughly enjoyed it. She just wished she could have left the kids in school overnight so that she could work right through the whole course in one sitting. She also jokes about having to find a live body to work on! (The residential courses normally find one for you - maybe another student - but she had to borrow her husband and even her children to work on!)
The happy ending:
Well as you can tell, my friend did take the home study option (who wouldn't!) She is now qualified and has started her Reiki business. She has a steady trickle of clients she sees and the word is spreading in her local area. She is still a long way off her goal of earning £20,000 per annum but if the current trend continues she should get there by the summer. I am now wondering how I can take the concept of home study and apply it in my own management training business!
